Our second visit to the Lauterbrunnen valley found us camping at Stechelberg – a tiny village at the end of the road into the valley. The campsite has basic amenities, a fantastic location, and views which we love. Clear skies greeted us on our first morning so we decided to take the cable-car up to Gimmelwald and then walk higher up to Murren. The cable car was full of excited British schoolchildren on their way up to Piz Gloria (the restaurant associated with the James Bond films). We quickly and smoothly rose the 1400ft up to Gimmelwald – coming close to the cliff face.
We left the tiny village on a footpath and spent an hour walking up to Murren. It was hot, steep and spectacular.
The mountains across the narrow valley seemed to be within touching distance.
Murren is a proper mountain village, extremely pretty, very popular. We sat on a bench just above the railway station to have our lunch. In front of us were the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau covered in snow.
This is one of the most impressive places we have been – the views are unimaginable.
The walk back to Stechelberg was steep but a good walk; it took approximately two and a half hours. Just after we arrived back at our campsite the cloud rolled in and it poured with rain. Excellent timing – it had been hot all day until then.
